Software is a set of instructions or group of programs. Software is very important for computer to perform any action or process because it perform any work as per the given instructions with the help of particular software. Without software computer hardware is nothing only a dump and can't perform any work.

Software can be categorized into two main types.

1. System Software

2. Application Software

SYSTEM SOFTWARE

System software is also known as Operating system software and used to operate any system for properly working.

Windows OS Screen

• It creates interface between user and system to access system and work on computer.

• It allows user to used all resources which are connected with computer.

• It allows user to manage files & folders, creations and deletion of data.

• It manages the tasks of users and completes it correctly.

• It provides support to users about software and hardware.

System software is installed in computer system with the help of any external storage device like CD/DVD/Pen drive etc. 

Example of some operating system software are M.S.DOS, Linus, Unix, Windows, Android etc.

These software installs in a hard disk of a computer and when we start computer it boots with the help of operating system software

Operating system software performs the following functions.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE

Application software is a software which is responsible to do any particular type of work like publishing, data work, designing etc.

Example of application software is M. S. Word, Corel Draw , M.S. Excel etc.

Application software performs different works with different application.

Publishing is a work to create newspaper , books, cards or any other pages for printing which comprises text , graphics with required color and format. Pagemaker application software is used for publishing work.

Designing is the also a big task. To design any logo, icons, magazines or any other pictures comes under this type of work. Corel draw application software is used designing work

Data processing is a work to create data base of any company or organisation and analyse the data, making reports etc. M.S.Excel/Access Application software is used for data work.
